  8. school board and an ardent opponent of busing and affirmative
  9. action.

  11.     "Most people in (predominantly white) south St. Louis
  12. resent being told they have to put their children on the bus,
  13. and the schools are going down, down, down. A lot of people
  14. perceive that when quite a few blacks move in, there is a lot
  15. more crime, and in (mostly black) north St. Louis there are more
  16. gangs and drugs. The main thing is that a lot of white people
  17. in our country came over after the Civil War and don't feel
  18. responsible for slavery. I resent affirmative action and quota
  19. systems. Quite a few white people get angry that black people
  20. are getting preferential treatment. We've done enough to make
  21. up for any wrongs."
